Pinholed Pier

art/pier

Part of the fun of photography is never knowing what you are going to get. I remember when I developed my first B&W print. Standing over the developer and watching the image come to life was truly amazing.

Since I make portraits for a living, I find that I don't have the luxury to be in awe of what comes out. I need to make sure that whatever I produce my clients will like, if not love. That's why I have turned to making pinhole images. This process of making an image dates back to the turn of the 19th century. There is no lens on the camera; there is no shutter just a simple piece of metal with a hole.

You never know what you are going to get and it is always a rush to run to the lab to find out if you made anything that is aesthetically pleasing. This summer with the thanks of a neighbor, I made a 4 x 5 camera. This image was made with that camera on Fuji Velvia film. This camera has brought back some of the child's play that I did in the darkroom so many years ago.

Another Happy Client

Here is another image from one of my clients.

Into the past

Again, it appears that I have been woefully neglectful on adding posts to this site. In the portrait business, the fall is the busiest time of the year and thankfully I have been busy. I thought that I would share a photo that I did for one of my clients.

I am learning more and more that clients enjoy some of my more creative endeavors that I do for them. Everyone gets tired of the same school photo of their children year after year. The challenge is coming up with new ideas as I have new clients. I am sure that I will keep learning and growing, while expanding my business.

Reflections

As a photographer, I see things a little differently when I am behind the camera. A simple wall becomes something more to me and when you add a reflection into the mix; a thing of beauty.

Been a little lax lately on the posts. Seems like life speeds along, preventing time to photograph or even process images that are sitting in the files. This image was taken on a recent trip to New York.

Although I have been there several times, I have never been satisfied with any images of the Chrysler Building until now. Word of advice, keep plugging a way at that idea in your head until you finally see it in print.
